Zeus is a 4 year old Newfoundland who was turned over in January to us due to a divorce. His previous owner was working very long hours and felt that Zeus deserved better because he was home alone for very long periods of time. He is very sweet and housetrained. A visit to the vet’s after his arrival revealed slight arrhythmia and a chest x-ray showed that his heart was slightly enlarged. A consultation with the cardiologist resulted in a diagnosis of a heart disease characterized by weakening of the heart muscle (dilated cardiomyopathy). In most dogs, this is an inherited disease and in very rare instances, this can be reversible. We started him on four medications and a low sodium diet. In early March, his congestive heart failure was resolved! There was no fluid seen in the lungs or the abdomen. He is to continue on the same medications and food, but doesn’t need to go back for 3-4 months unless something changes. This month, Zeus was adopted by this wonderful woman, Kelly, who is also a member of our Penn-Ohio Newfoundland Club. Prior to adopting Zeus, she made all of the arrangements with her vet in Ohio to make sure he continues his follow-up care with their cardiologist. He will have an amazing home with her and will be such a great companion. I am so happy for both of them!
